What Are the Best Graduation or “Moving Up” Songs for Elementary Students?
As the school year comes to a close, many elementary music teachers begin preparing for one of the most meaningful moments of the year: graduation and moving up ceremonies. Whether your students are leaving preschool, crossing a bridge into a new grade level, or celebrating the end of elementary school, music can make these milestone moments even more memorable.
At my school, our Preschool students (ages 3–5) participate in a special ceremony on the last day of school that includes a “moving up” song. Additionally, our Grades K–4 students (ages 5–10) participate in a moving up ceremony where they cross a bridge to symbolize stepping into a new school year and new adventures ahead.
One of my favorite memories is watching my daughter Sarah cross that bridge when she was little. These traditions become such treasured moments for families, students, and teachers alike.
To help other music educators, I’ve continued adding to my Wakelet collection of Graduation and Moving Up Songs for students grades preschool to middle school. Over the years, I’ve gathered songs, ideas, articles, and resources that may help you plan a meaningful ceremony for your own students.

Tip: Every school community is unique, so a song that works beautifully in one setting may not be the best fit for another. Before teaching or performing a song for a ceremony, it is always a good idea to:
Review the lyrics carefully
Consider your school culture and traditions
Ask for administrative approval if needed
Make sure the song feels age-appropriate for your students
