How Can I Create My Own Timers?
Timers can be a game-changer in the elementary music classroom. They help students transition between centers, prepare instruments, clean up efficiently, and even refocus during calming moments. While there are many premade timers online, creating your own allows you to customize the visuals, music, and overall vibe to fit your classroom perfectly.
One of the easiest ways to create customized timers is with Canva. Here’s the process I use to make my own music classroom timers!
Step 1: Create a Landscape Video
Open Canva and create a Landscape Video project.
Once your project opens:
Go to the Apps menu on the left-hand side.
Search for Video.
Search for the timer you need.
For this example, let’s create a 3-minute countdown timer.
Important Tip
Be sure to check the actual duration of the timer video before adding it. Some videos are labeled “3:00” but are only one minute long.
When you find the correct timer:
Click on it.
It will automatically be added to the video timeline at the bottom of the screen.
Step 2: Add a Musical Background
Now let’s make the timer more visually engaging.
To add a background:
Click Elements in the left-hand menu or directly in the video timeline.
Search for:
“musical background”
“music notes”
“animated music”
or any visual style you like.
Helpful Filters
Click Graphics
Choose the Horizontal filter so it fits the video layout properly.
When you find one you like:
Place the playhead at the beginning of the timeline.
Click the element to add it.
Drag it across the entire video timeline.
At first, the background will probably appear on top of the timer. To fix this:
Drag the countdown video above the graphic layer in the timeline.
Now the background sits behind the timer.
Step 3: Remove the Countdown Background
Most countdown videos are not transparent.
To fix this:
Click on the countdown video in the timeline.
Select BG Remover.
You can also:
Use the Transparency Slider to slightly lighten the background visuals so the timer numbers pop more clearly.
Step 4: Add Music
Now let’s add audio from Canva’s library.
To add music:
Open the Audio App from the left-hand menu.
You can also access audio from the timeline menu, but I prefer the left-side menu because the filters are easier to use.
Helpful Filter
Click:
Filters
Then choose Instrumental
This removes songs with lyrics and makes it easier to find classroom-friendly background music.
There are not a large number of instrumental tracks that match exact timer lengths, but there are usually several good options.
To add the music:
Place the playhead at the beginning.
Click the audio file.
It will automatically appear in the timeline.
Step 5: Match the Music to the Timer
I like the music to end exactly when the timer reaches 0.
To adjust the music:
Drag the audio track so it lines up correctly.
Trim or split the track if needed.
Quick Shortcut
To split the track:
Place the playhead where you want to cut.
Click the audio track.
Press S on the keyboard.
Delete the unwanted section.
You can also:
Use the Fade menu to fade music in or out smoothly.
This is especially helpful if you trimmed off the beginning of the song.
Step 6: Add a Fun Ending (Optional)
Sometimes I like to add animated confetti at the end of the timer.
To do this:
Click Elements
Search for confetti
Filter by Animated
Place the playhead where you want the confetti to begin
Click to add it
This gives the timer a fun celebration effect when time is up!
Step 7: Export Your Timer
Before exporting, preview the video to make sure everything works correctly.
When ready:
Click Share
Select Download
Choose MP4 Video
VERY Important
If you used Canva audio, you must click:
Connect Social Accounts
This allows Canva to verify the audio licensing for sharing on platforms like YouTube.
Once exported, you can:
Upload the timer to Google Drive
Insert it into a Google Slideshow
Upload it to YouTube
Embed it into lessons or presentations
FAQ
What if Canva doesn’t have the countdown timer I need?
This happened to me with both a 10-minute timer and a 2-minute timer.
For the 10-minute timer:
I searched Google for a royalty-free countdown video and uploaded it into Canva.
For the 2-minute timer:
I found a Canva timer that stopped at the 1-minute mark. Then I found a matching 1-minute timer with the same font and background.
I placed them next to each other in the timeline, and it worked perfectly!
What if Canva doesn’t have audio with the correct duration?
I’ve run into this as well.
In those situations, I used the royalty-free music library from YouTube Audio Library.
Using the filters, I searched for:
Instrumental tracks
The correct duration
Music approved for monetization
I downloaded the audio file, uploaded it into Canva, and added it to my timer project.
I hope this gives you some ideas for creating customized timers for your elementary music classroom! Whether you use them for centers, transitions, calming moments, or instrument setup, personalized timers can make classroom routines smoother and much more engaging for students.
