Music Makers Match! A Fun Way to Practice Instrument Recognition

Are you looking for a fun and flexible way for your students to practice identifying musical instruments? I created the Music Makers Match! Instrument Editions to give elementary music students an engaging matching game that can grow with them from preschool through fifth grade.

How Does Music Makers Match! Work?

To play, place any two circular game cards on a table. The students study the pictures and find the one instrument that appears on both cards.

The game can begin as a simple visual-matching activity. Students point to the two matching pictures or place a small manipulative on each one.

When they are ready for an additional challenge, students must find the match and name the instrument. This helps transform the activity from a picture-matching game into an instrument-identification and vocabulary activity.

Three Differentiated Grade Levels

Music Makers Match! is available in three levels:

• PS/K Classroom Instrument Edition: Five instruments appear on each card, making the pictures larger and easier for younger students to examine.

• Grades 1–2 Classroom and Orchestral Instrument Edition: Six instruments appear on each card, introducing students to a wider variety of instruments.

• Grades 3–5 Classroom, Band, and Orchestra Instrument Edition: Eight instruments appear on each card, creating a more challenging activity with a larger collection of instruments.

Teachers can choose the edition that best fits their students’ ages and previous experience. The different levels also make it easy to revisit the activity as students develop stronger instrument-recognition skills.

Color and Grayscale Options

Each edition comes with game cards in both color and grayscale. The grayscale version provides a printer-friendly option for teachers who do not have access to a color printer.

Each set also includes a teacher picture key in both color and grayscale. The key places each instrument picture next to its name, making it easy for teachers, substitutes, and students to check the instrument vocabulary used in the game.

Multiple Ways to Use the Game

Music Makers Match! can be used in a variety of classroom settings:

• Music station: Students work with a partner or small group to find and name the matches.

• Small-group activity: Students take turns turning over two cards and identifying the matching instrument.

• Whole-group game: Display two cards on the screen and invite the class to find the match.

• Instrument review: Require students to name the matching instrument before earning a point.

• Substitute plan: After a short explanation, students can play independently or in small groups while reviewing meaningful music vocabulary.

• Early-finisher activity: Students who complete another assignment can use the cards for additional instrument practice.

Level Up the Learning

The activity can be adapted as students become more confident:

1. Find and point to the matching pictures.

Preparing the Game

These are printable resources and require some preparation. After downloading the files, choose the color or grayscale edition, print the pages, cut out the circular cards, and laminate them for repeated classroom use.

Once prepared, the cards can be used again and again for stations, review activities, group games, early-finisher activities, and substitute plans.
