Veggie Rhythms! - Dance Move and Rhythm Play-Along
From 2024: Every few months, students tend to follow a new trend. Recently, a teacher in an elementary music education group shared about the Veggie Dance trend from Gracie’s Corner YouTube channel, named "Veggie Dance." This catchy tune has become quite popular, with people unknowingly finding themselves humming along to it. The trend has gained so much traction that even my teenage daughter shared the video with me, mentioning that her friends were also into it.
Within the music education group, a member requested a dance and rhythm play-along video featuring call-and-response sections with vegetable names. Over the weekend, I managed to create this video, considering that many of us are nearing the end of the school year and looking for engaging activities for our enthusiastic students. I hope that this video will assist you in your teaching efforts and also act as a helpful review tool for rhythm patterns involving quarter (crotchet), eighth (quavers), half (minim) notes, and quarter rests.
Addition for 2025
This week, I added Chop Chop Chippity Chop to the lesson with the Veggie Dance Rhythm Play-Along. The younger elementary students loved it. Here is the process:
Lesson: Veggie Rhythms!
1. Introduce Chop Chop Chippity Chop.
2. Practice various tempos by having the students set the tempo.
3. Ask the students what they will put in the pot.
4. Use slides 4-7 to show the rhythms of their choices. Students will echo the items that they put in the pot.
5. Move to the next slide and introduce the Veggie Dance.
6. Go over the rhythms and movements.
7. Slide 23 is fast, and sometimes I alternate with just performing the steady beat.
8. Play the video and have some musical fun!
I created the Manipulatives to assist with teaching the movements and the rhythm patterns and to include the Chop Chop Chippity portion.

The rhythm patterns contain the following:
Asparagus - four eighth notes
Broccoli - two eighths and a quarter note
Brussels Sprouts - two eighths and a quarter note
Cabbage - two quarter notes
Cauliflower - four eighth notes
Celery - two eighths and a quarter note
Carrots - two quarter notes
Lettuce - two eighth notes
Kale - one quarter note
The final pattern had no pause for echoing the pattern. Therefore, it is one pattern for the words: Beets, Collard Greens, Corn, Potatoes, Spinach
